Here is a short video starring Mr. Hazel. It’s big; about 25 mb; not really suitable for dialup connections. It’s cool, though. It was shot last weekend. In any event, you probably want to save this to your desktop or someplace so that you don’t have to download it again for some reason.
Mr. Hazel is a UK coworker of mine (some previous posts referred to him as Mr. Ermine). He started flying a few years ago, after I joined the group we both work in. At this point, he has way more overall hours than I do. He decided he was interested in aerobatics early on and has been pursuing that. Of late he has been competing in the Pitts. He flew the Pitts twenty-eight times in August for times as short as eighteen minutes; long enough to go to the practice zone, do the routine once or twice, and fly back.
He has a share in a Yak-52; a Soviet trainer. This thing is rated to +7 and -5 gs, which is the basis for the name of the share-owners’ web site. The video is of him flying the Yak.
We’re planning to go flying in the Yak on Thursday. I’m strangely looking forward to it though I know I’ll be terrified much of the time. I asked him if I should bring my own bag; he said no, that the plane has some but that we’d only do gentle things. Rolls, loops, that sort of thing. And that it was usual to feel a little queasy.
