Friends,

As you may have heard, daylight savings time falls three weeks early this year in response to federal legislation passed in 2005. As a result, computer operating systems and programs must be patched to correctly handle the early change to daylight savings time as well as to perform date arithmetic using appropriate daylight savings time periods.

This note explains what you need to do to ensure a smooth transition to the new daylight savings time scheme. More information may be found at the following Microsoft support site.

Personal Computers

There are certain changes that must be applied to personal computer operating systems and email clients. Divergent Technology will be applying all necessary updates for clients with Site Total Management plans.

Assure that the February 2007 Cumulative Time Zone update is applied.

If you have Windows update enabled, you should already have this update. To verify, open ‘Add or Remove Programs’ from the Control Panel. Check ‘Show Updates’. Scroll down to look for ‘Update for Windows XP (KB931836). Machines configured by Divergent Technology have Windows Update enabled by default.

If you run Outlook in a non-Exchange environment, you will need run a separate tool, as well.

Computers that are not attached to the network must be updated manually if date compliance during the four-week total extended daylight savings time period is important.

2000

Windows 2000 has passed the end of ‘Mainstream Support’ and will not be receiving an automatic update. This article describes how the machine may be manually updated.

Apple

Users running OS X 10.4.5 or later do not need to apply an operating system patch. Other users should refer to the following article.

Please check with your software vendor for details. Divergent Technology will ensure that appropriate patches are applied to server-based packages used by Server Total Management and site Total Management clients and desktop software for Total Site Management clients.

Microsoft states this caveat…

All users of Microsoft products affected by the time change should give extra attention to meetings and appointments scheduled between March 11, 2007 to April 1, 2007 and October 28, 2007 to November 4, 2007, referred to here as the “extended DST period.” (In this article, the terms “meetings” and “appointments” will be used interchangeably.) Users should view any appointments that fall into these date ranges as suspect until they communicate with all meeting invitees to make sure that the item shows up correctly on everyone’s calendar both internally and externally. To minimize confusion during the affected date ranges:

· Include the time of the meeting in the e-mail request so that invitees can double check the correct meeting time (such as, “Project brainstorming – 11:00 A.M. Central Time”).

· Exercise caution with the appointments and meetings in the extended DST period. When in doubt, verify the correct time with the organizer..

Total clients should receive an email by the end of the day Friday listing significant client and server software packages and daylight savings time resolution.

Please give us a call if you have any questions.

Sincerely.

James
